Volunteer Hairdressers Combine For ‘Do Something! Day’

A volunteer team of 13 hairdressers joined their considerable forces for ‘Do Something! Day’, conducting community haircutting events at the same time in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne on July 19. The super-powered team gave 81 haircuts in just four hours, in an endeavour coordinated by Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA).

Melbourne Team

The philanthropic day was founded by Sky News Channel’s Smart Money Anchor Host Jon Dee, in partnership with Your local club. Do Something! Day celebrates and recognises volunteering platforms, community efforts and the everyday good deeds performed by ordinary locals.

Sydney Team

In the hairdressing sector, the Sydney event was held at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, where the team provided free haircutting services for the at-risk, homeless and disadvantaged in the area. The Melbourne Team worked at Frontyard Youth Services, providing trendy haircuts for at-risk youths between 12 and 25. The Brisbane Team lent their support to the Endeavour Foundation, offering haircuts for staff and employees to acknowledge their amazing work in supporting those with disabilities.

“When people talk about sustainability, more often than not, they forget about the ‘people’ element,” SSA Co-Founder Paul Frasca said. “That’s why initiatives such as Do Something! Day are so important – not only does it build awareness for the amazing services and volunteers out there, but it encourages us to actually get up and give our time, skills and resources for someone else’s benefit. Right now, we see this as one of the most important goals of the sustainability movement.”

Brisbane Team and Endeavour Foundation staff

“Each great haircut by the Sustainable Salons team will provide access to something many of our disadvantaged and at-risk young people could never afford,” shared Sandhya Jadunundun, Frontyard Youth Services team leader. “It will provide them with a sense of self-worth, confidence and a sense of connectedness to a greater community.”
