Hair colour application is constantly evolving, from traditional foils to freehand painting and then all of the absurdity the internet can think of. With that in mind we have to introduce what is possibly the Internet’s messiest colour iteration to you – Drip Hair Colour, Instagram’s latest rainbow colour fascination.
The technique has been created by Denver-based colourist Taylor Rae, who has amassed over 100,000 Instagram followers with her bold, alluring rainbow hair looks. This technique is maybe her most audacious yet, and it involves basically pouring colour on someone’s pre-lightened blonde head, while wearing the appropriate splash wear, and then strategically blending the bold hues.
Hair is sectioned into top and bottom parts, and colour is diluted with water to achieve the desired dripping effect. She is also sure to put cling free film between the sections to ensure the various colours of separate sections don’t accidentally drip into each other.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I wanted to see what would happen if I poured a bunch of colour on [someone’s] head,” Taylor told Allure. “Initially, I started with a mannequin a few weeks ago and then I had a client who was willing to let me play with her hair to bring it to life for real!”
“When it comes to dripping, the trick is to make sure to use colours that complement each other in each section to avoid creating an unwanted muddy color,” she continued, exploring the technique in a variety of bright colours on her Instagram feed.
“What I didn’t show in the video that I uploaded is that after dripping the hair colour onto each section, I ran a wide-tooth comb through to spread the colour and ensure full, dimensional saturation, which is why I think it came out looking as solid as it does.”
Taylor’s videos on the technique have been viewed over 1 million times, and the technique has been published on Cosmopolitan, Metro, The Sun, Perez Hilton and the aforementioned Allure Magazine.
Basically it’s a thing. Grab a mannequin (or your most audacious client), a cape and way too much colour and discover current colour trends at their messiest.
