Sustainable Salons has officially landed in New Zealand, hosting a launch event at Servilles Academy in Auckland and inviting salon owners, media and VIP guests to discover their important organisation. The launch marked Sustainable Salons’ first international foray and expansion as a global entity. It was hosted by Devon Tong, Sustainable Salons NZ Business Development Manager, to officially mark the group’s New Zealand presence.
The evening included speeches from Sustainable Salons MD and Co-Founder Paul Frasca, Deborah Manning, KiwiHarvest CEO and Servilles Salon Group founder Paul Serville. Paul Frasca began by explaining the entire Sustainable Salons history and its current status with 450 members and counting. He also spoke about why the group’s expansion into New Zeland is such an important step for the organisation and the industry at large.
“New Zealand is not only renowned for its awesome scenery, but also for being progressive on many issues,” said Paul Frasca. “They have the passion and the motivation to really take sustainability to the next level, and that’s what we are most excited about. We couldn’t have asked for a better kick-off! Having a room full of people all eager to know more about creating a sustainable future is our idea of success. Education and awareness is such a huge part of the journey… and if we can get just one more salon to take action because of it, then it means we’re one step closer to achieving our goal of zero waste.”
Deborah spoke about the amazing work of KiwiHarvest in changing the entire landscape of waste and hunger throughout New Zealand. Sustainable Salons in New Zealand will partner with this foundation much like its local contingent has always worked with OzHarvest, donating 100 per cent of the proceeds from recycling its members’ collected materials to KiwiHarvest. For every $1 donated, 2 meals will go to someone in need.
“KiwiHarvest is delighted to have been chosen by Sustainable Salons to be their New Zealand charity partner,” Deborah said. “Both organisations share a common ethos of finding innovative solutions to reduce waste and promote sustainability. We look forward to a long and mutually-beneficial relationship.”
Paul Serville spoke from a salon perspective, championing the sustainability message and how necessary it is for every international hair industry. Sustainable Salons is a major figure in this endeavour, collecting up to 95 per cent of salon waste and redirecting it for meaningful purposes.
“Servilles is really excited about being on board with the Sustainable Salons movement in NZ,” he shared. “It means that hairdressing salons will start leading the way with recycling and sustainability here, and hopefully the service Sustainable Salons provides us could eventually become the norm for all businesses… then we really can make New Zealand the pure, green country that we want it to be.”
