David Bowie’s legacy lives on, and his iconic aesthetic and unique persona are constantly drawn from in terms of editorial inspiration and approach to look and attitude. This remains true in the hairdressing industry, where Chung-Yang Su and Sanja Scheer of rokk ebony innovated this theme and were nominated for Hair Expo 2018 Victorian Hairdresser of the Year and Colour Technician of the Year, respectively, for their efforts.

This creative testament to the Bowie figure went big in terms of colour, fashion, hair and beauty, creating a British 70s glam rock look while also bringing it into current creative hair and fashion trends. Aesthetic concepts of androgyny, retro and international trends and the idea of clashing time periods went into this editorial ode to Ziggy Stardust.

Wild curls, braids, undercuts, Bowie’s iconic Mohawk, fringes and broken layers were all used in the styling, while glitter, star and accessory adornments heightened the creativity even further. Bright and clashing fashion prints and textures also enhanced the theme, while bold, but somehow very wearable, colour was also a focus, in yellow, green, pink and peach iterations.

“I love pushing the boundaries of colour, exploring all possibilities, but keeping it consumer friendly at the same time,” Sanja explained. The looks I create must be ‘wearable’ by our clients. Drawing from Ziggy Stardust pop culture, the looks taps into the existing understanding of this aesthetic and of retro-inspired fashion. Encouraging clients to wear sophisticated pops of colour, bringing out their individual flair is one of my signature approaches.”
