Box Hill Institute’s hairdressing students finished their year on a high after completing professional, polished hairstyles for the fashion and floristry student graduate catwalk, Botanica.
Botanica was held on Wednesday, 5 December in Deakin Edge’s contemporary, glass-prism theatre at Federation Square. It featured a spectacular floristry-themed runway on which the work of emerging fashion designers was modelled, complemented by perfectly matched hair and make-up.
Box Hill Institute’s Head of Hair and Beauty, Ruth Browne said that hair and make-up students were very impressive. She said, “Botanica provided great session experiences and teamwork opportunities under the creative pressure of a runway event.
“Students perfected the catwalk ponytails, ensuring the hairstyles were appropriate for a wide variety of headwear. I congratulate the hairdressing students and teachers for perfecting the models’ hair after each quick change, which included floral headpieces, caps, bridal veils, and even masks,” she said.
Botanica was the grand finale to an exciting year of development at Box Hill Institute, which included the highly praised Kabuki show at Hair Expo’s Next Gen gala, and guest artist seminars by Sharon Blain, Sarah Laidlaw and Kobi Bokshish.
Another highlight of the year occurred in November when student Jen Draper was named the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Association’s 2018 Best Barbering Student.
Educators have benefited from a mentored photoshoot with Sharon Blain and Sarah Laidlaw, which was published internationally at least 21 times.
“The reinvention of Hair and Beauty at Box Hill Institute is well underway,” Ruth said. “A watershed moment in the hairdressing school’s history will be the introduction of the Pivot Point curriculum in February 2019.
“In January, Box Hill Institute will train teachers to educate, using the respected Pivot Point method, which is a real leap forward, ensuring that salon employers receive trainees working to the highest standards.”
Ruth said she was looking forward to announcing more big developments in hairdressing, make-up and beauty in 2019.
