L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2020 has its entries closing within the next week so there is still time for you to finalise your entries. As such, we’ve brought in a true expert to help you with your entry. Wendy Gunn of Ink For Hair won the national iteration in 2018 and 2019’s international competition, harnessing the global fame and opportunities that come from that success.
Here she shares her wise words to help you get to that same level, incorporate her important advice into your entries, due August 31.
INSTYLE: Why should you enter Colour Trophy?
Wendy Gunn: Entering the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy is an amazing opportunity to showcase your work in marie claire magazine. It’s about challenging yourself! Of all the hairdressing awards this is the only award where the most important part of progressing through the competition, if you become a finalist, is to be able to re-create your look to match your photo that you entered with.
INSTYLE: What are your top tips and tricks for entries?
WG: You have to always remember that the brief is what you would see on the front cover of marie claire. Practice if at first and if you don’t succeed try again. Your entry should also be forward thinking as your photo shoot can sometimes be taken up to a year before the finals. It’s not so much about winning but challenging yourself.
My top tips are:
- I constantly research front covers of magazines to see what stands out.
- I try to choose a background for my photo that doesn’t clash with the hair.
- Eyes are the mirror to your soul, so the model needs to connect!
INSTYLE: What is your most important rule of entering Colour Trophy?
WG: Your work needs to be fashion forward, edgy but most of all its about creating beautiful hair – a beautiful colour, combined with a great cut and of course the hair should be in great condition. It is also important to let your model know they may be needed for more than just the initial photo shoot.
