Box Hill Institute (BHI) hair and makeup students received important creative experience backstage at Melbourne Fashion Week (MFW), creating looks for the new Pendulum Studios label, as designed by Box Hill Institute alumna and fashion designer, Tess Whitfort. Tess launched the label during fashion week with a night club style party, demonstrating artistry and sustainability at the unique show, and current BHI students provided the important finishing touches.
“The brief was tricky as we wanted the models to look grungy and creative but high-fashion and fresh at the same time,” Tess said. “Hints of neon colour were in the hairstyles or flashes of it in the make-up. We alternated between crazy hair and crazy make up to make sure nothing was overdone.”
This practical opportunity follows on from other editorial chances offered to students at BHI, such as assisting acclaimed hair stylists Sharon Blain and Sarah Laidlaw and styling wigs and make up for The S Event at Federation Square earlier this year.
Tess is a shining example of the practical education and success it emboldens at BHI, becoming one of Melbourne’s top emerging designers and a new global face in sustainable fashion. Last year, she won the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition – the Redress Design Award – for her zero-waste pattern cut, up-cycled collection and in 2017 she won Melbourne Fashion Week’s Emerging Student Design Award.
Congratulations to Tess and the talented students at BHI for their collective input into this creative showcase.
