As the hairdressing and barber industries continue to innovate, dynamic spaces are inspiring in their novel approach to hair and customer services. Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop in Brisbane was recently awarded Best Barbershop Design at the Australian Modern Barber Awards (AMBA) and, after discovering this two-story hybrid bar and barbershop, it’s clear to see why.
The all-encompassing men’s style destination is situated at The Barracks. It has a room for party hire upstairs, with both a six-chair and two-basin barbershop and a licensed bar downstair. The modern oasis allows men to relax and have a beer with their hair services, and was a finalist at the AMBAs in the Australian Modern Barber Business of the Year and Best Business Director categories as well for this successful business model.
“Jimmy Rod’s offers an experience that’s not your ordinary barbershop. We are the one-stop shop for men’s services and offer group bookings to encourage our clients to stay for longer, relax and socialise. We’ve got different rooms and groups can also play their choice of music in the area they are hanging out in,” Jimmy shared. “We have a fully licensed bar with three beers on tap and different areas where you can chill out and relax before or after your barber appointment. We also offer other grooming services, including facial scrubs and face shaving.”
The award-winning aesthetic embodies the feeling of a traditional barbershop, with a warm interior, leather couches, wide mirrors and contemporary touches including a PS3, to cater to every facet of the client’s experience.
“The design is modern-industrial with a lot of brick and marble and traditional leather furnishings,” Jimmy said. “There’s a separate design in the barbershop area that features light colours and the bar area has more mood lighting. The design of the salon came from Shave Saloon which featured a bar and restaurant. It’s closed now but it used to be in the Brisbane CBD before COVID and lockdowns impacted the city. We decided to move away from food and focused more on bar and barbershops.”
Catering to a clientele of men usually between the ages of 20 to 45, the barbershop demographic includes professionals during the week in its position on the edge of the Brisbane CBD, while also seeing tourists visiting for sports and music events at the nearby Suncorp Stadium. The space also services dads and their sons who experience the barbershop mostly on weekends and is starting to see more backpackers too, who always stick around for requisite beer as well.
The space’s services are headlined by The Deluxe shave, which includes a facial, and exfoliation, as well as a hot towel and cold towel and after shave. Services are complemented by American Crew products and tools.
With their award nods in the books and an ever-growing clientele ready to experience every aspect of Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop, this bold institution will continue to grow.
“We are looking at offering colour services, which we have been doing a bit of but it hasn’t been a big focus. We’ve seen a big increase in barbershops offering colour and want to focus on increasing our colour service offering in 2023,” Jimmy shared. “We are also working on a similar concept in another location to further extend the services we offer and include waxing and eyebrow services. It’s in the works so watch this space.”
