Conversations about suitable hair in the workplace continue to be contentious, with 39 percent of UK company hair policies requiring employees to sport ‘professional’ or specifically defined hairstyles at work, but why does this continue to be the case in the hair industry? Asks Hair Expert Nicole Petty of Milk + Blush.
A British hair professional recently revealed that during an interview at a salon, she was told that she needed to change her colourful hair, despite working in a sector that should theoretically welcome unique hair.
Hair is a powerful tool for self-expression, as any hairdresser knows, and it serves as a canvas to demonstrate their sense of style but also establish a connection with clients. Changing your hairstyle and colour can reflect your personality.
Hairdressers can also use their hair as a walking advertisement to demonstrate their skills and expertise, as experimenting with different colours and styles can showcase their versatility as a stylist. By experimenting with their own hair, professionals can also gain firsthand experience with different techniques and products which will help them provide polished services and skills for customers. Equally, clients will appreciate stylists who demonstrate that they are knowledgeable and experienced by trying products and techniques personally, and permitting employees to experiment will create a fun working environment that welcomes and encourages creativity and trying new things.
Here are three tips for salon owners wanting to to encourage stylist hair creativity.
Relax hair policies
Strict policies that prohibit specific hair colours and styles are outdated and will limit hairdressers’ creativity and willingness to provide more unique and innovative services. Encourage employees to wear whatever hair colour and style they wish.
Provide training opportunities
Offering regular workshops, training, and new qualification opportunities can help stylists further develop their skills, remain inspired to try new things and expand their knowledge, which will reflect positively in increased customer satisfaction.
Establish a positive culture
Creating a safe environment that stylists will feel comfortable in will encourage them to express themselves through their hair without fear of judgement or criticism. Communicate with employees and establish open communication and respect amongst team members to foster a more welcoming salon culture.
