The first day of Australian Fashion Week displayed the future of fashion by way of Next Gen presented by DHL, with hair by Redken and hair director Jacky Chan of Oscar Oscar Salons. Collections by the four program winners selected for the show, Emily Watson, Amy Lawrance, Abby Potter of House of Campbell and Potirakis, created a diverse runway that required a versatile hair look to complement each aesthetic.
“All four designers had unique requirements, the key words ranged from regal undertones, lightly disheveled to fluffy,” Jacky shared. “However, they all had one common key word and that was ‘natural’. So, my goal was to build texture by using Redken’s Root Lifter and Full Volume Mousse and heat to create natural texture and movement.”
“The product allowed me to enhance the texture of each model for an individualised look whilst being cohesive. To build on this look I used the Redken Dry Texture Spray as my finishing spray when the models launched onto the runway.”
The showcase included Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl style stories of adolescence from Emily Watson, complete with playful skirts, paired sets and babydoll dresses, with hair more unkempt, to Amy Lawrance’s “wood nymph vibe”, as told to Vogue. This genre mash up ranged from sci-fi elements to classic hand sewing techniques, in fabrics such as untreated, undyed silk, hand-loomed in India and starched by Amy, then crafted into intriguing silhouettes.
House of Cambell by Abby Potter was a feminine manifestation with historical features such as military sashes and berets, paired with classic girly pieces and details, such as tulle roses, cropped suits and girlish dresses. Finally, Potirakis, led by Chris Potirakis, Ana Kim and Hannah Flood, was inspired by crime movies, with whirring police sirens, and hoodies, cargo pants and plenty of black completing the theme. It even spanned to formal gowns in the diverse offering, with each model in cinematic character.
