American salon owner, O&M CØR. Creator and curly hair expert Kindale Godbee recently travelled to educate with EdwardsAndCo and O&M, and we sat down with her to discuss her inimitable hairdressing background, her trip to Australia and all things curls. Read on!
Tell us about your background in hair.
I have been in the hair industry for ten years now, and I specialise in natural hair and curly cutting techniques. I’ve owned my salon, The Heir Salon, for five years now. I really saw natural hair was up and coming at the time. Everyone was going natural and cutting their hair off and I wanted to get into the market of shaping hair, colouring curls specifically and really caring for curly hair. I’ve been doing that in my salon, specialising in shaping out the curls and creating different cutting techniques so that it’s easy and comfortable to talk about curls and growing curly hair.

How do you feel that textured hair care has evolved for you since you started?
It has evolved leaps and bounds. Every week I feel like there’s a new product, there’s a new shape and there’s a new trend with curly hair. I’m constantly pivoting how I approach curly hair, but now, with my clientele being more conscious about clean products, introducing that into the salon has been an evolving element. It’s not just me as a stylist giving them information, but they want to learn the information. They’re coming to me with the questions now. I really love that it’s a one-on-one experience between myself and my client, versus when I started and I was just giving them all of the information.
How have you seen Australia approach textured hair?
In Australia, I see that there is a need and a want for curly and texture education here. I’m so happy to be here with O&M ambassador Jaye Edwards and to teach at curly hair and texture cutting techniques at EdwardsAndCo. I see that there’s a hunger for it, and I’m excited to be here to educate on that.

What would be your main tip in textured hair?
Divide and conquer. That is my number one tip. Curly hair can look like a lot or even feel like a lot, and sometimes you can get overwhelmed as a stylist, so really dividing the hair into bite sized sections and tackling it that way, whether it be for colour or cutting, is key.
Hydration is also important, and I love the hydration from O&M, especially the Hydrate & Conquer Shampoo. It’s been really giving me a good result.
Why do you align with O&M?
I align with them because while textured hair may be big, it is very fragile and we need clean products, and O&M deliver original clean products that are kind of the hair, especially curls. We need a clean approach to colouring our hair as well, something that is not abrasive, so our curls won’t lack or be damaged after we colour process our hair or treat our hair with heat.
What do you love about being in Australia?
I’m just very excited to be here with O&M. This is just groundbreaking. It’s inspiring that Jose Bryce Smith is a woman and a pillar in the industry, it’s great to be connected in that way and with her beautiful team. This has been such a beautiful experience, and it’s just the start. I’m super excited for what’s to come.
