Hair Festival 2023 has officially been announced and tickets are available for the dynamic event, taking place at Carriageworks in Sydney over the June long weekend! A major highlight of the inaugural 2022 event was the live hair competitions, which brought the competition scene back into hair with inspiring results.
Covering key fields of colour, editorial talent, men’s hair and teamwork, in the titled categories of Splash of Colour, Editorial Glam Slam, Barber Street and Dream Team Collab, respectively, the competition saw entrants create looks live, parade them on stage and then, hopefully, receive their trophy.
“I entered the competition for the opportunity to bring home an award,” shared Editorial Glam Slam winner Paul James Graham of Paul & Paul Salon. “The Hair Festival competitions are a great platform for exposure and showcasing your creativity and winning a trophy goes a long way in the promotion of my career and salon business.”
“I entered the competition because I wanted to learn how to create an editorial look. By being in a team with two seniors at my work I definitely learnt a lot. Another reason would be to become more confident in competition scenarios, to make me better prepared for the future,” shared Dream Team Collab winner Georgina Fardoulis, of winning team TONI&GUY Cronulla. Her teammates, Andy Kwan and Louise Blake, cited challenging themselves individually and as a team, and for something fun, different, new and even uncomfortable, as prime reasons to enter.
Winning or medalling in the competitions garnered editorial coverage, a trophy-winning moment on stage and a host of prizes from an array of brands, including vouchers, education packages and product and tool packs. The winners also received creative imagery and marketing and social media material, while also being able to advertise the wins to their clients.
If you’re thinking of entering the 2023 competition – which we highly suggest – last year’s winner have some top tips to take away.
“Arrive prepared,” Paul James said. “Make sure you know exactly what you’re doing and that you can complete the look perfectly in the time allocated. Engage the talents of a runway model or someone who could be one. In a live competition your entire look is judged head to toe in person. You will likely fare better with a model who can best sell your look on stage and when walking the runway.”
“Stay present,” added Barber Street winner Benjamin Tuita of BOY+Co. “Speaking to a few competitors afterwards, nerves were a part of every conversation. Only in the here and now can we fully appreciate and enjoy any experience. With all the talent we have in this industry it would be amazing to see more artists looking to express themselves at next year’s Hair Festival.”
Don’t miss this important opportunity to highlight your skills at the Hair Festival live competition, hosted amidst the wonders of the MarketPlace, education sessions, REALTalk forum of business insights and the must-attend Wonderland party. It’s all happening at the industry’s hub of hair, with tickets available now.
“Entering the competition was a great experience and winning it just topped off an already great weekend at Hair Festival,” said Splash of Colour Winner Alisha Lafferty of Analog Hair. “It has given me so much drive to do more and enter again.”
