Clever Curl is doing their part to share the gospel of curly hair, championing inclusivity and ensuring salons can cater to all hair types and textures. With an expansive education program through 2024, Clever Curl will be educating and inspiring across Australia and New Zealand on this vital topic.
Clever Curl was created by a group of Australian curl specialists inspired by the Curly Girl Method. The product range offers a highly specialised line of hair products built to elevate curly hair in a tailored fashion. Thanks to years of discussion with experts and prototype testing in curl-specific salons, these products offer the ideal hair solution for curls.
All products are formulated with minimal ingredients and are sulfate and silicone-free, as well as being 100 per cent Australian made and owned, cruelty free, vegan and made with a reduced carbon footprint.
This range is complemented by a comprehensive education agenda, which will deliver three education levels in 2024. The agenda is led by textured hair specialists David Corry and Leah Campbell, who share a passion for creating diverse and inclusive salon spaces.
Leah is an Education Manager with a bespoke, expert approach to education. Leah is committed to empowering hairdressers with skills and knowledge to elevate the client experience.
David is the brand’s Lead Educator who has been in the industry for 25 years, having taught at a London Hairdressing College. He has owned the Brisbane based Curl Specialist Salon, Marcia Gibsons, for over ten years. David’s expertise ranges from wavy to coily hair, through which he’s built a welcoming space for all clients and fostered a unique and diverse curl community within his own salon.
“To me it would only make sense that salon spaces will thrive if they could include all texture, even the tightest of curls,” David shared. “That melting pot of cultures, all with the one desire to just have their hair done somewhere they feel welcome, comfortable, safe and confident that the Hairdresser understands their own unique hair texture.”
The education opportunities start with the Clever Curl Open House, which is an introduction to the Clever Curl approach for hairdressers of all levels. The two-hour introductory demo session offers an initial insight into textured hair, including information on how it can be treated, styled, and cared for. The class educates on the unique nature of curls and teaches the right product usages and necessary techniques. It also includes a Q&A session from the expert team and a take-home Clever Curl sample pack.
“I’ll admit, before this class I thought that all afro hair was the same, but through this class I’ve learned they can be so different. Each curl has its own unique shape and texture, so it’s been really fascinating to delve into the whole world of afro hair. We can now help a broader range of people out there in our community,” shared Amy, Owner of Gold Hair Collection, about this session.
The Clever Curl Masterclass is in-depth, hands-on training to master the art of curls, as offered to all professional hairdressers. The intensive, practical, hands-on workshops runs the gamut from the theory of curls through to dry cutting techniques, bespoke hydration treatments and styling methods. Attendees complete a full curl cut, hydration and style service on three models. The class is limited to small, intimate groups and is available to Clever Curl stockists only.
“I like that Clever Curl is venturing out to take care of all types of hair. Many people with hair textures such as mine are too scared to go into hair salons because of the fear of losing their natural hair texture,” shared Dee, a model for the Masterclass.
Finally, the Advanced Masterclass focuses on Afro Tight Texture, as a one-day follow up to the Clever Curl Masterclass. The session explains the history, cutting, hydration and styling techniques for all types of diverse, tight texture afro curls. Each attendee will complete a full cleanse, hydration, cut and style on their own model.
“I just think Clever Curl is amazing and what we can do with it is second to none,” shared Kelly, Owner of Hair Poetry Darwin. “It really blows my mind all the different hair textures we can cater to with Clever Curl. I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing movement with curly hair and people being able to accept the beautiful hair they were born with. If you’re contemplating if you really need that training, I would say go and get it. Dave’s whole outlook on how he looks at tight textured curls and afro curls is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to bring it to my salon.”
Built under key tenets of knowledge, collaboration and inclusivity, this is your chance to embrace, understand and celebrate natural hair textures and upskill to make your salon a more welcoming place.
