Taking to Sydney’s Bangarra Dance Theatre in late February, Monique McMahon, founder of QUE Colour, co-founder of MCM Beauty and Wella Professionals National Ambassador, and international US representative Devyn Pennell conducted the NEW ERA education course. The education covered colour and business from these leading global experts.
“I think the main focus was about bringing newness to the salon floor,” Monique shared. “We wanted to bring a brand new education platform to Australia by bringing Devyn from the US on to the stage, and she definitely bought some new techniques that had not been used before, which was super exciting. I think the overall feeling of the colours were glossy, glowy and natural utilising the underlying pigments and celebrating what’s already in your chair.”
The course showcased transformational model looks with hero colour techniques to inspire attendees. Techniques such as glazes, reverse balayage and Devyn’s mohawk sectioning combined with wet balayage wowed the audience. Business insights were given in a question-and-answer panel that navigated social media tips, salon culture and much more.

“When we sat on the couch we really spoke about TikTok, social media and aligning with the right brands that are going to support your own brand, including how to choose that brand. We also discussed posting, the best times to post, what you should be posting and the changes that are happening on social media platforms right now,” Monique said.
Devyn is an educator, salon owner and social media expert with over 545,000 followers across multiple platforms. She was inspired to come educate in Australia to both gain and teach versatile perspectives and invest in education more broadly with an international focus to help hairdressers step outside of their comfort zone. She provided essential wisdom to attendees.
“A main takeaway was about working smarter, not harder,” she said. “You don’t have to do a lot of foils or a lot of crazy formulations to get an incredible result. We also showed how doing a colour that suits someone’s skin tone is so important, that’s what we showed today with our blonde to bronde transformation.”

In business, Devyn utilised the power of her immense personal brand, teaching the basics of social media and how it relates to building a business, gaining referrals and amassing a clientele.
The event was held in one of Sydney’s pristine locations, with a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge providing the ultimate model backdrop and showing off the best of city for the international visitor.
“I am just so happy to be in Sydney and to see the city,” Devyn shared. “It’s so cool to see that there’s so much inspiration to be had all around the world. Being in the US, there’s stylists wanting to be inspired and then being out here stylists also want to be inspired. That’s the cool thing about the hair industry, we’re all striving to be inspired to try and to learn from each other and grow.”
