O&M and Sheridan Rose Shaw of MAMAWEST styled NAGNATA’s runway show in balletic style, as a pre-cursor to this month’s Fashion Week.
The innovative runway show included a live drawing component, for a luxury athleisure collection by designers Laura May and Hannah Gibbs. Held at China Heights Gallery on May 1, models posed in bold stances on the runway as attendees were taken through a live drawing exercise that gave focus to the garments’ shapes, textures and movement.
“The show is an immersive experience, where silhouettes inspire and soundscapes captivate. Forever intertwining the worlds of art and fashion,” Laura shared. “We want guests to experience how silhouettes inspire, soundscapes captivate and movement mesmerises.”
“The concept of the show is connect with your inner artist, observing the beauty of the human form and the way movement drapes fabric, fibre touches skin,” she added. “Drawing inspiration from the grace of dancers off-duty, timeless shapes are nuanced through natural fibre innovation and sensual seamless layers, celebrating the intertwining of the worlds of art, fashion, and movement.”
The hair looks complemented this aesthetic with an understated, textural and movement-based brief. Two different hair looks highlighted the hero NAGNATA headbands and scrunchies.
“We drew inspiration from the ‘off-duty ballerina’ for the hair; we really channelled that by enhancing the natural texture of each models’ hair. It’s about celebrating that texture, working with their hair type rather than against it,” Sheridan shared. “It’s celebrating the individual that’s in front of us, which really works with their brand and our brand. It’s kind of like one of those moments where they’ve just been on the dance floor, and they’ve just semi ripped off their scrunchie, a semi half done moment.”
The collection featured the brand’s signature matching activewear sets, knits, loungewear and mohair, as well as re-purposed fabrics to create headbands and scrunchies. This speaks to the brand’s zero-waste manufacturing process, which ideally suits O&M’s values as well, as well as the MAMAWEST brand. With a wealth of backstage experience, this was Sheridan’s first experience as hair director, where she put her leadership skills to good use in leading the styling for the immersive show.
The models’ individual hair textures were aided by three key products – O&M Style Guru Styling Cream, Know Knott Detangler and Surf Bomb Sea Spray – to enhance a “sweat effect” with an emphasis on beautiful hairlines made to accentuate baby hairs in a way that looked both slightly distressed and natural.
Get the look:
- Start by water spraying hair until damp.
- Apply O&M Know Knott Detangler and follow with a small amount of O&M Style Guru to enhance the hair’s movement.
- Apply O&M Surf Bomb to “crisp” and intensify the natural texture, which will reactivate the curl or natural flow of the hair.
- To further enhance the look, blow dry hair using a diffuser attachment.
