Travis Bandiera’a Maverick Collection earned him a nomination for 2018 Australian Hair Fashion NSW/ACT Hairdresser of the Year for 2018 for very good reasons. The collection is inspired by the fact that hairdressers work in black but show their creativity in bold and inspirational hair looks, and this mentality of both obeying and breaking the rules motivated the collection.
“I was standing in the salon on a busy Saturday morning, thinking about how inspiring my team looks, purely through their hair and perfect choice of black clothing,” Travis said. “Watching these uniformed individuals whose self-expression is portrayed through beautiful pastel and editorial hair, I admired their passion for unleashing their creative spirit on a daily basis; this is what triggered my inspiration.”
The collection boasts a high fashion editorial aesthetic, with black uniform styling that prioritises creative hair cut, style an colour. Natural makeup also achieves this dichotomy, focusing on glossy, healthy skin that complements the texture of the clothing, which has geometric shapes and illustrates each personal look for the models. The lighting boasts a clean background to put the hair in the literal spotlight, drawing the eye to the important colours and textures of the hair.
“Although we’re drawn to an all-black uniform, our creative minds find their release through bespoke hair aesthetics,” Travis continued. “It’s the one thing where you get to break all boundaries, and express your artistic vision. There are no limits, no hiding behind a black uniform. It’s all you. We are all conformists in our fashion sense, but totally nonconformist and a rebel in our own right. Each model has a subtle deviant side representing their desire to break the generic mould and stand out from the crowd.”
